'The Blue Vault, The Tender Frame'

'The Blue Vault, The Tender Frame'  Stuart Hyde 23

'It's not about how the world looks, rather how it makes me feel...
The Badlands, the folds and faults, the harsh encircling Sierras, the wildly differing Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, drive everything in my practice.
Though veering between the semi-figurative and the almost completely abstracted, the work is always driven by the source, this environment, still new to me, my emotional response to it, and my attempt to somehow communicate that.'           Stuart Hyde

'Evocative landscapes involving broad, energetic strokes, often with a surprisingly limited palette, are followed by lighter, deceptively sensitive touches. There is a vigorous, scratchy, linear construction to Stuart Hyde's work, using a wide variety of media such as palette knives, charcoal, ink, oil-bar and scrapers, which give an incredible variety and expression to the mark making process.'

'His work creates landscapes that are, at the same time, real and imagined. Colours and forms redolent with temperature, emotion and feeling, contained within borders - shapes, patterns, forms - that negotiate a line between abstraction, figuration and thought. A body of work that responds to the landscape, the artist, and time.'
