PURE ABSTRACTION

'Sir Gawain & The Destrier Gringolet'

100x100 cms, acrylics, inks, metallics and charcoal on stretched canvas.

From an on-going series based on Arthurian legends. There is a passage in the Middle English poem 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight' where the description of Gawains war horse Gringolet seemed to me to be crying out for paint...

"The bridle was embossed and bound with bright gold;

So were the furnishings of the fore-harness and the fine skirts.

The crupper and the caparison accorded with the saddle-bows,

And all was arrayed on red with nails of richest gold,

Which glittered and glanced like gleams of the sun."

'The Betrothal'

100x100 cms, acrylics, inks, metallics on stretched canvas.

The doomed marriage of Arthur to Guinevere, daughter of Leodogran. Launcelot had been sent by Arthur to fetch the future Queen from her fathers castle, and, depending on which of the legends one might choose to follow, they might have already become lovers by the time of the marriage.

I've always found the story of the three, whichever version, incredibly sad.
